Unfortunately, in Burma/Myanmar yesterday there was a coup d'état by the military which overthrew the democratic government elected a few months ago and put under arrest the leading members of this government, including Aung San Suu Kyi, Nobel Peace Prize winner in 1991 and leader of the National League for Democracy (NLD) party.
This is not a situation that I really like for two reasons:
- one is the fact that in 2020 military coups are still 'normal'. This must make us think a lot, especially of us in the West who have a worldview that is very different from reality in my opinion, with regard to a great many subjects and situations;
- the second reason for the role that Russia and China are playing and for the fact that there is still a strong conflict within the international for a by these two states with the occidetal part of the world.
With great curiosity I am intent on seeing the role of Great Britain in this situation, Burma/Myanmar having been under the control of the British crown for more than 100 years, and the role of neighboring countries (Bangladesh, India, China, Laos, Thailand). There have been many speeches on this subject in the British Parliament today and the openings of committees of inquiry have been decided, but it is all to be seen.
See you soon for updates.
